a thing to look at whenever you are bummed about the world

One of my favoritest things in the world is Advanced Style, a street style blog by Ari Seth Cohen of elderly ladies with killer style. Last fashion week, we hosted a party in honor of these women together at the Ace Hotel, and it was really, really inspiring. It was really special to get to hear women with the most interesting style philosophies discuss it together, and guests seemed relieved to be at a non-gross party where people really were just interested in clothing and style and character and celebrating an unabashed enthusiasm for it; the kind of thing that, ironically, often gets lost during a time of year that's supposed to be about fashion. Ari's friend Lina Plioplyte made this video of the night, which makes me smile every time I watch it.
And, while you're renewing your faith in humanity, I really highly suggest watching this trailer for the Advanced Style documentary (!!!!!)
And here's Illona's Stylelikeu video, talking about her eyelashes and being generally amazing.
Wrinkles and scars and imperfections are signs of life, not of being young and naive and sexy and nonthreatening, so if an aging woman doesn't take measures to erase indications that she's built character through experience, if she can no longer be viewed as a sex object or as recently discovered and relevant, she may as well just disappear. It's subversive to age as these women do, making themselves present, because they want to be. I know now that I'd rather keep all my life scars and be erased for doing so than have to erase them myself. Seriously, these videos are go-to save points for when you feel like the world sucks.

  9. Amazing post. These woman are such an inspiration. Beauty and self expression is something to be embraced and seen at age. It is not refined to young, flawless models. They love life and also accept and love themselves.

  13. This event seems like it was thrilling! I love Advanced Style and I hope to have that kind of zest for life and creativity when I'm that age. It's so refreshing to see women rejoicing in themselves as they are - a sadly rare treat. Plus, they can accessorize like no other!

  19. Although I love "The September Issue" the feeling I always come away with is kind of like, "Oh, that's for the cool kids...it's (the fashion industry) such a ruthless machine...I'll never get there." But even just watching that Advanced Style preview, I got this huge feeling of inclusion (even though I guess I'm not all that advanced) and just a love of creativity without worrying in the slightest what others are going to think. Big inspiration! So important! Thanks Tavi <3

  20. This is one of the best posts I've seen! I love the message that you're putting across here and you are so right - all of these woman are beautiful and so incredibly individual, more so than any younger, sex symbol could be. They are entirely comfortable in themselves which I think is something to really be proud about.

  22. I absolutely adore advanced style! Always so vivid and proving that, contrary to some general belief (and dreadful myth) elder women do not have to leave behind the days of self-expression and use of their amazing creativity. Beautiful Post, full of vivacity and wit.

I know very little about the Advanced Style Documentary, and would like more information if that were possible. Is it coming out on DVD? It looks fascinating, not to mention both inspiring and illuminating. I would be heartbroken not to see it. "I think it's fun to dress up. It's an excercise in creativity." I agree with that, and want to see what else these wonderful women have got to say....
"I am dressed up for the theatre of my life everyday."
I can not express how much I agree with this statement. Fashion and Style is more about 'Why not?' than 'Why?' I know that when they said, 'Everybody wants to look like everybody else' I felt that. There are so many people who never engage the vast possibilites to be everything and anything they wish to be.

"We say what we feel. We are what we feel. We dress like we feel." Many women could learn a lot from Illona's Stylelikeu.
She has had such a life, and I feel for her. I am so glad that she found herself, painted Tenessee Williams (who I am a huge fan of) and found the confidence.

She speaks beautifully and with such a lot of passion. Innovative and 'thank god I'm not young anymore'? - amazing song sung by Maurice Chevalier, and one of the other things that reminds me that one should embrace become older rather than being repulsed by it.

Thank you so much for bringing Advanced Style to more people. Although I have been an avid reader and follower for a while, I can honestly say that there is no blog in the world I enjoy reading more.

You write beautifully and the last phrase:
"Wrinkles and scars and imperfections are signs of life, not of being young and naive and sexy and nonthreatening, so if an aging woman doesn't take measures to erase indications that she's built character through experience, if she can no longer be viewed as a sex object or as recently discovered and relevant, she may as well just disappear. It's subversive to age as these women do, making themselves present, because they want to be. I know now that I'd rather keep all my life scars and be erased for doing so than have to erase them myself." was a powerful coup-de-force.

  23. Advanced Style is brilliant on so many levels. As a young woman they actually teach you a lot about style in the end- you should not be afraid to take risks.

  26. This post is my favouritest posts. You're shone in the dark, probably. After all the improbable power was there!!! These exciting women have proved that the old age happens only sincere, and it doesn't concern them. That it is necessary to be itself and not to extinguish youth fire if to you for 90. These women inspire. I love their style and the relation to life. I very-very-very respect them. And their fashion is the realest fashion in the world! They have big life experience and know that wear.
Thank you so much for this magnificent post, Tavi.

I think it is absolutely wonderful that you got to be among these women and hear about what they had to say about their personal style. I'm sure you had a marvelous time and absorbed so much. What an absolute rad occurrence to celebrate the flamboyancy of life and get those people together in one room! I am so glad you guys hosted that party! I'm just happier knowing it happened. That would have been the only party I wanted to go to at FW. I love the senior citizens! Not like that.

This post sounds like you able to fit the grooves of your gear to this gala and be part of it. It doesn't seem like an amazing-in-theory work-thing that you were around while feeling simultaneously awe-chilled, disconnected and jaded.* (<-- I've been there.)

I hope you continue to have access to more things of the type you enjoy, and that you gain experience and grow from the things that may not be exactly your sort. (Blergh - sounds like Life Lessons 101.)

I find it delightful that your interests and talents and personality and courage and effort (and mad networking skillz) are taking you on this one of a kind, built just for you journey.

  63. love your comment about their aging being subversive. great way to look at it. as a woman of a certain age (who loves your blog and the rookie, btw - wish that one had been there when i was coming up!), i have found that you are only invisible if you think you are. sure, some people (the ill-mannered among us) will do what they can to ignore you, but you can't let them define you. and anyway, the way i look at it is, if i'm invisible, that means i can get away with a whole lotta stuff, right?! back to the ladies on advanced style - he's lucky he lives in nyc, where you see women like this - i live in texas, where we don't. wish we did, but they don't dare go wild down here.

  87. My daughter and I ordered a dress from Doll House which was to be custom made. I placed the order on a Monday and was surprised to get a phone call the following Monday to say the dress had arrived it only took eight 8 days. I took the dress home and when I put the dress on my daughter, I realised that had just altered the dress (in store) and found pins still in the side seams. I was so disgusted with their lie – when confronted they would not talk to me or acknowledge what they had done. To all you mum’s out there DON’T BUY FROM DOLL HOUSE.

Read carefully, it's said that Huntington disease has no cure, yes with the western medication but not with herbal medicine, my daughter's situation made me to realize that with doctor Bharat herbal medicine it can be cured. In 2014 she experienced difficulty in concentrating, memory lapses and depression, at first I taught it was stressed from her place of work until I took her to hospital and the doctor made me to understand that it's juvenile Huntington disease because she is still in her late 20s, which she inherited from my late husband that died of the same disease, the doctor told me it has no cure, but gave her some medicine which I noticed that it has side effects, my daughter situation got worst each day that passes, she was the best at her place of work, now a shadow of her self because of this deadly disease, she speaks to herself often, she was really going insane, I do not want to lose my daughter the same way I lost her father, in 2018 I carried out research on internet and bumped into a comment of a lady that got cured of Huntington disease, without wasting time I contacted doctor Bharat whose name was mentioned in the comment, now is been 3 years my daughter is living her best life again, for those that have the disease or have any love one suffering from Huntington disease, contact doctor Bharat via dr.bharatkings@gmail.com

  96. I want to make this testimony public and as a sign of gratitude to Dr Bharat. On how he saved my husband from Huntington's disease with his herbal medicine called BUJA, i decided to reach out to those still suffering from this disease.
My husband suffered Huntington disease and it was really tough and heartbreaking for me because he was all i have and the symptoms were terrible, my husband experience hallucination, depression, anxiety, abnormality walking, involuntary movement and memory impairment. We tried various therapies prescribed by our neurologist but none could cure him instead the situation got worsen each day that passes by. I spent much money yet no improvement, I really do not want my husband to die so i searched for a cure on the internet and i bumped into a testimony of (Ronda Jasil) who got cured from Huntington's disease. and she left the e-mail address of the Herbal doctor who has the cure of Huntington disease. I never imagined Huntington's disease has a cure until i contacted him and he assured me my husband will be fine. I got the herbal medication he recommended and my husband used it and in one month we started seeing improvement, now is been 1year and 6 months my husband is okay and full of life again. Huntington's disease has a cure and it is a herbal medicine called BUJA. contact doctor Bharat now on dr.bharatkings@gmail.com Thanks for reading my testimony
