a revolution, i sense it
There is something to be said for the fact that three magazines have just put designers and editors themselves on the cover. It means either that they're becoming more celebrities or that some magazines are brave enough to use the people thatt make what we love on the covers over a model or actor wearing what we love. For some reason this gets me so, so excited.

that is pretty amazing.

I think it's better to have a fashion designer or an editor on the cover of a fashion magazine anyways. It shows you that the fashion designers and editors are really the ones that make it happen and start the trends. The models just sell the clothing for them. Plus it makes a bold statement putting the face of a designer or editor on the cover. Plus I rather see the face of the designer than the celeberty or model. I don't think designers get enough credit sometimes. The designers/editors are the ones who start something and they are also very inspiring. I'm so glad you put this up. :)

I am a silent reader of your blog, and I love it every post has an unusual energy.Keep it up, kisses from a fan Portuguese, the same age as you;)
I think that "The September issue" has a lot to do with that, as well as a general celebrity change in other fields (like restaurant chefs, music producers and other "back stage" personas that are becoming front stage personas in recent years)
Also interesting is a portrait of Andre Sorrano ( a photographer) on the cover of Vouge Men
I totally agree! I mean, actresses and models are great, and they are talented, but I feel like fashion magazines never really honor the stars of the actual fashion industry- designers. I am noticing, however, that designers and stylists and all those previously behind-the-scenes people are stepping out into the spotlight and getting the recognition that they finally deserve.
I agree with your second point- magazines are putting people we love wearing things we love on the covers. They are brave and wise.... I'm sensing a new trend...!
wow, really looks like a great read!

Hi. Amazing covers. where is it from? did you scan them yourself? I'm new to the blog world.
I am excited about this too. I find Pheobe Philo to be as beautiful as a model and such a cool, intelligent and wildly creative woman; she certainly deserves to be on the cover of magazines. I wonder who else will end up on a cover, who would you most like to see?

That is an interesting observation. Maybe there will be a revolution!

I think it's much, much better that they're willing to put editors and designers on the cover. I'm sick and tired of talentless actresses! It's time to get across the message that designers/editors work as hard or maybe even harder than they do.
Hell to the yes. This makes me excited too. Finally some people who are actually really important get to be on these covers!
Mustart x
I think its great its certainly something to aspire to rather than the Paris Hilton's and such types :D
It makes me excited too. Why shouldn't the whirling-masterminds behind the whole industry get to experience a bit of the glamour too...not to mention the fact that some designers are SERIOUSLY BEAUTIFUL.
PS. The Gentlewoman is absolutely fantastic. Also the brainchild of a Scot, which also makes me very excited. There aren't enough of us celts in fashion!
I get you, tavi. seeing celebrities on magazines makes it feel more fake, for some reason. I guess it reminds me too much of People or something like that.
I personally think this is kind of amazing, because we need to see the people behind the scenes, right?

i adore that shot of anna wintour.... so iconic!

Such an interesting turn! I hope to see more of the artists! They deserve the recognition.
A trend I really hope catches on!

Yeah. It's pretty nice that 'Anna' is on the cover of Industrie, but the effect is more low-octane than I would have preferred? As in, "Hey, you guys! Let's just photoshop a photo of Anna on our cover! Yay sales!" I forgot what event that shot was from but I documented the original here: http://fuckyeahannawintour.tumblr.com/post/210322964
I still plan on buying it, but if she *actually* posed for a magazine cover I would buy out the whole store. In every nation. Supposedly she modeled for magazines in the '60s but that's getting off topic and AGH I WILL NEVER FIND THEM.
Me too! I want all of them.
I really like all the womanly presence in magazines lately. It shines a light on who really makes the magic.

I might be hugely skeptical but I feel like it's more because they are becoming more like celebrities because of street-style blogs etc. Though that isn't necessarily a bad thing I suppose, at least they have a legitimate reason to be famous and are more inspirational.

new and cool on outside cover=new and cool on inside magazine? i am liking this trend :-}

I really liked watching "The September Issue". It's so neat to see the important people behind the fashion scene and magazines.. :)
Yes! I like clever people! Intelligence is very attractive, as far as I'm concerned :-)
Tavi, this is exciting indeed.
Before I make my comment, I want to say the reason why I am worried about my comment. Sometimes I feel that individuals or ideals only become known and popularized within my headspace because I begin to think and analyze more into these individuals or ideals. As a terribly lame example, when your family purchases a new car, you begin to notice the same car used by strangers- and you think, "Wow everyone has these cars now?". TERRIBLE EXAMPLE I KNOW. But it gives the idea that I am trying to explain my 'context living' statement. We chose to live in a certain context and forget that others don't follow the same trail either at all or exactly how we do as individuals.
However, as the responses indicate there are people who have also noticed this emerging 'trend', shall we say. I love it and I hope it is as you call it, a revolution!! I enjoy models being on the covers wearing what the general public would condone as outlandish stylized looks- it creates excitement for the garment within me. Having said this, it is refreshing to see that the creators are being featured on the covers!
It could be that these creators are being featured on the covers as they are the 'popularized' individuals from the masses of creators in the fashion industry. I wouldn't call them 'celebrities' because they have, for so long, been at a celebrity status only within the context of the fashion world and are only in the past year began to trickle down into mainstream media at a higher rate. The creators are beginning to be popularized because, I feel, the market is slowly becoming more educated and aware of the functions and elements of fashion and design. I also feel that while conspicuous consumption may well be alive for many years to come, it is fading out slowly and the focus is growing onto the design and the methods of design used by creators, because the people who wear it want to be informed. I am of these consumers.
It is a much welcomed revolution that I hope takes off from now onwards. Thanks for the thought-provoking post Tavi, I truly admire your work.

Fuck. I did not perform a spell check haha
awesome, finally people can fully appreciate people behind the glamour and photo shoots

They're definitely becoming celebs.
http://bigmouthvintage.com
wouldn't overstate it, honestly. but who knows?
maybe i'm just in a bad mood after staying up for what turned out to be a damn sh** tier episode of Lost.
Goodnight.
I think it's exciting because intellect is being celebrated in women versus pure external beauty.
Alex-I agree that it's also a kind of celebrity thing, especially with Anna Wintour and The September Issue, and with street style blogs that photograph all these editors outside events. But I think the attention is well-deserved, for sure.
RAD
you are the Anna Wintour of this generation x
It's all very aspirational in the sense readers are now more exposed to those behind the lense. Definitely appeals to me.
your blogs awesome ! i will fill you! can you follow me back please! thanks :) http://joliefashion.blogspot.com/
many many years ago covers had only beautiful anonymous models, then came the supermodels, then the actresses bounced back to compete with the models, while the media were propelling the designers and many many designers into the spotlight, then the media put themselves into the spotlight, the editors.
Please let us not forget the quality and creation. It is all about this.

<3 your blog
brilliant idea! why didn't we think of it before? designers are the new celebrities! Tell Anna!
Everytime I read your blog I remember what Buster Keaton said to Charlie Chaplin after seeing Mickey Mouse in his first Disney´s movie. "Charlie, we´re gonna lose our jobs. That mouse do everything we do for free!"
I bet magazines are doing this because of you and the other bloggers. You are as good as any of them and you don´t charge.
So it´s time to put the creators in the cover. They are doing already a lot undercover as bloggers.
But, of course, none of them are as brilliant as you! And fashion is just a start for an entirely new profession you´re creating without even knowing it. As a Jewish-Brazilian writer said: the slick gets power with an ulcera in their stomach. The innocent, with a smile on their face. Keep smiling, Tavi! You´re the one.
I think that this new phenomenon is sending out a positive message to fashion lovers. It is not just about a beautiful model featuring on the cover pages, but "regular" people sending out same fashion messages in a human way.
FD-www.diamondvirgin.com
wait so INDUSTRY is a magazine!!!???
I bought the Gentlewoman yesterday, and the front cover is done in such a nice material, that factor has single handedly made me love the magazine

I agree, it's a nice change to be featuring designers and editors in the mix, they bring a different and very often more in-depth angle to our knowledge of fashion.

I'm also a sillent reader of your's. So,so weird the portuguese fan comment, cause i was just about to send you a simillar comment. But anyway, i love your blog, and even more what you did in the fashion field, i was so inspired on you when a created my own fashion blog. About the covers: i think it's great having designers and editors on them, and it makes me very excited to, but don't you think it just takes away the glamour, the dream, the fantasy that models (much more models than celebrities)give to them? Maybe beacuse most of the sceans that are on the covers are day-on-day pictures, maybe. Anyway: kiss kiss of a brazillian fan and fashion maniac, the same age as you!
If you see "fashion" as a cultural trend itself, it is the life-cycle of the trend playing its course. Great research and commentary. You're to be taken seriously.
