This Friday, EarthShare is hosting an event about eco-friendly fashion. EarthShare is my green non-profit organization of choice because it raises funds through workplaces and distributes them between 60 more green non-profit organizations, locally, nationally, and internationally. That's sort of cheating though, because that's like saying 60 organizations are my favorite. But whatever! Not important! This thing is happening Friday! And the non-profit part should tell you that I'm not getting paid to write this -- I want people to know about it, dammit!

At the L2 event I attended and took part in last Friday, Erin Schrode's talk about her project, Teens Turning Green, was especially inspiring. She pointed out that eventually, sustainable clothes shouldn't be special or exclusive or expensive, they should be the norm. Ashamedly, I can't claim to be demonstrating this too well, other than that most of the clothes I buy are from thrift stores or yard sales. Anyway, this show will be a slightly nuttier, less everyday version of that idea, with clothes made out of things like the above M&M wrappers and plenty other weird things that are probably crazy detailed and cool to see in person. And, y'know, Chicago isn't really a fashion city, like, at ALL, so I always like learning about the designers here, especially when dresses made out of cardboard are thrown into the mix. I won't be there but can't wait to see photos. If you end up going, email me. I want to hear all about it!

The last scholarship I applied for was make a dress out of scotch tape. Didn't go as well as planned, but you win some you lose some.
I absolutely look up to you. Your 2 years younger than me but you've accomplished so much. Sister Wolf has been linking you to her profil about speaking out on Terry Richardson. You are widely appreciated, please don't forget that. If you could use the amazing voice that you have to reach to whoever you can about the Richardson scandal please do so, because it is absolutely outrageous.

Great dress! I'd love to see this in real. Big YES to more creativity (and holding on to clothes, and passing things on, and diy, and swapping, etc.) and less consumerism.

The maddeningly slow internet here won't let me see that M&M dress AND this is the third time I've had to write this comment, but nevertheless, thanks for highlighting the green fashion issue (and the fact that it shouldn't need to be highlighted in the first place)!! I want that M&M dress! This reminds me of an old episode of Project Runway that Susie Bubble mentioned a while ago, where the contestants had to make clothes out of stuff found at a hardware store.
It always kind of pisses me off when stores have like, "sustainable limited editions" of things. Why not have everything be sustainable, all the time?
sounds interesting .... one question though: could you provide a definition for "sustainable clothing"? I'm not ignorant nor do I live under a rock (unless you can say that living in NYC is like that) so I can understand the concept, but though I see "sustainable" and "green" and "eco" everywhere, no where are these terms actually explained. what is the actual significance of wearing sustainable/green/eco/etc. clothing? im not playing devil's advocate here - im just seriously curious.

shit, i'm like addicted to the peanut M&M's, so i could make a new suit every year. but i somewhat doubt that it feels nice on the skin. yet i think sustainable clothes can really take off once our governments learn to differentiate between hemp and marijuana. 'cause hemp is an awesome plant.

I don't know why everybody love that dress, I find that it's a bit crappy, even if I have to admit that the person who made it is quite a genius with a lot of time, I find the bags made by Mitz* a bit more comfy and useful, using candy wraps of al types.
And the manufacture is also more elaborated.

I wish I wish I could have gone to this event. It sounds very interesting, totally something I would want to have checked out. Sadly, I do not agree to the picture of the dress you posted up. I adore the idea the designer had, to make a gown/dress of eco friendly materials but the design looks very messy and a bit crappy to me. I'm sure the design on paper was great but I don't think it was well executed (as in putting to effect). I have seen better.

Wow, the wraps of the M&M's look like a lot of butterflies flapping in the form of a dress. I love the way they are cut. Would be beautiful on a darkbrown skin woaowww.
why is "eco fashion" always made of trash?
"eco fashion" is all about reducing waste and pollution mostly in textiles. a way to do that is to incorporate "trash". it could also involve organically grown cottons, recycled plastics woven with fabrics, etc. or it could even be meshing together thrift store finds into a new piece. anything that either uses something that would otherwise end up in a landfill or growing something that doesn't involve the use of harsh chemicals that could leech into the ground water. and as they say, one man's trash is another man's treasure.

wait, Tavi, you're in chicago??? this is marcy, who wrote you that crazy email about helping you redesign your website (I know, presumptuous) --- but now that I know you're local, you should totally take me up on those photoshop lessons, you could be one hell of a photographer besides all the other awesome stuff you're doing. well, that and I'd probably lend you my camera as it seems you lost your USB cord. hah.
on a separate note I'm dying to know where you're in school; I went to North Park Elementary school at montrose and damon before Loyola Academy for highschool and if you're at NPES I am praying for your soul.
(actually on note of usb cord, if your camera uses that little weird ending (looks like a small rectangle on top of a large rectangle to make a strange shape, and not just a normal usb ending) I have TONS of those, and best buy should too, just make sure it matches before you buy it!
