Los Angeles is weirdly inspiring, and I don't mean just the skate and surf cultures that inspire Proenza Schouler or the girls in Clueless. I mean that so much of it is fake but in that sense it's a city so representative of uh everything and there's something sort of raw and rude and creepy about that and the idea of it is inspiring in a really odd way. Summer, PLEASE hurry up. At the moment there are not enough hours in a day and I want to be Weetzie Bat.

Is that like a Vampire Bat, only Weetzie?
Love the inspiration, its lovely, I love your blog as well!!Is the last image a book its so interesting!
agree. and its orangeness. all the colors are a little too bright, but not in a crisp clean new york bright, but a sun faded, warm and tacky bright.
Awesome inspiration! I agree, summer should come soon! I would like to go to LA sometime.

hey just to let you know-- not everything in LA is fake! it's incredibly easy to avoid everything that is fake and instead live a life surrounded by genuine people and real meaningful experiences. you just have to be a real person, yourself.
I think it's because we get so much mass marketing here and so much of the same stuff that it leads one to do ripped and graphic stuff to try and be original and not like all the stuff that surrounds us.
I so want something like that Proenza Schouler undershirt. Or leggings, or both. Socks too. I'm tempted to go to the local Target or CVS, get some cheap white whatevers, tie them up and dye them in our pay washing machines. Such is LA.
we can hang out in encinitas california if you want to. we can buy vans with black and white checker board. you have been missed. http://lara-serbin.blogspot.com/
Great inspiration!

hah i agree- thats exactly whats interesting about it, getting past the stereotype and hittin it raw as you said, i find it a lot like new york through and many aspects..
haha cant wait to see the special thingy's you've been making!
you have a wonderfully creative blog-would love for you to check out some of my fashion illustrations!
bespok.
gosh, since reading weetize bat when i was about your age (golly, i sound old when i'm not), weetzie has inspired just about every fiber of my being. yeah, kind of. go ahead and read the other dangerous angels books too, if haven't done so already, they're all gorgeous.
I have ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS wanted to be Weetzie Bat. That book was so essential to who I've become that I can't even begin to express how excited I am that you've read it and loved it. Wait 'til you read "Necklace of Kisses." Then you'll never want to be anyone but Weetzie.
Weetzie Bat! :D Dangerous Angels is so inspiring in every awesome artsy way.
I LOVE LIA BLOCK AAHHAHAHAHHHHHH
Change your name to Weetzie Bat? Legally? Yes? Do it.
Dear Courtney Love, you're a total mess and I adore you like a bottle of super loving friendly vodka. xo
Here in aus we've just left summer.
I already miss it!
Follow my blog, it's updated daily!

I cannot WAIT until Summer, will be awesome :) x
LA seems like the ultimate summer city. I can only imagine the gorgeous fashion walking the streets on a hot July afternoon.
Sincerely,
Sarah from The Etiquette Cult
I too, wish I could be Weetzie Bat.
Isn't it such an awesome novel?
I'm glad you're having such an awesome time in Shangri-L.A.
thank you for sharing these pictures{they gave me inspiration to write some lines with which I was strugling>>> I love winter but I think we all had enough>>>some sun please
Inspiring as usual :)
I am reading your blog for a few weeks and finally I comment. If you feel like adding something to your FAQ - how do you manage school between all the lace and leather? :)
Good wishes from Germany!

LA is okay... I always feel I need to be with someone strong when I'm there. Lots of weird stuff goes on in the city. It still holds awesome shopping centers, conventions and Hollywood...so I still visit. :D
Fantastic! When I was a kid the look I always aimed for was a Clueless/Courtney combo. Thrift store meets designer...always a good look!
i actually love that blue dress-thingy :)
i've never been to LA, but i get all sorts of impressionss of that place which makes me want to go there... rather terrified of it though!

I've never been to L.A. properly, I've only driven through it, but I love the way that you described it, because that's pretty similar to how I imagined it would be.
I love Courtney Love.
read more of francesca lia block books. they can be a bit hokey but they are also very beautiful and worship L.A.
Was that during one of Courtney's sane moments?
I want to be Weetzie Bat too! I want her bejeweled and fringed and sunkissed. I'm reading Necklace of Kisses right now, actually.
I love how LA culture is so unapologetic: it knows its fake and totally loves it and therefore works it. That makes me sound slightly evil, perhaps...

LA today is not what it was in the 80s. Any sense of inspiration is limited to the past.
But I'm with you on Proenza Schouler.
love your blog. someday youll be a fashion designer. youre not like the others. you just have fun with fashion.cause thats how it should be. awesome post too. hate how people like stacey london take away that passionate fun and make people wear boring stuff like coach. you rock!
VERY COOL!
Love the middle photo :)
I know, can't wait til summer!
Summer never comes fast enough... sigh. But Spring Break is right around the corner (for me)! So that helps.

oooooo it has been summer in LA lately. Mini skirts and jean jackets. Last week we made a weetzie bat pilgrimage to oki dog. It was magical with david lynchian characters galore, layers of grime and hand scrawled signs. I got two scoops of ice cream for 1.25!
Francecsa Lia Block! GAH I love her. Girl Goddess # 9 is my favorite!

Augh Tavi! I may be twice your age but some part of us is spiritually connected.
Weetzie Bat was one of the great unsung stories of my teenagehood! Glad to see the old icons are still iconic.
Keep on doing what you're doing, it's great.
So much of LA is real though, if you skip Hollywood Blvd. If you get into Silverlake, where gays and cool coffee shops abound, the real creative monster will show it's face.
A tonsillectomy and 5th quarter of grad school later……Greeting from L.A. Tavi!!!
Long time no comment!!!
Perfect post to comment about, being a diehard born Angelina I have to say your comment of L.A. is right on the $$$$. L.A. is composed of so many trends and fashions. One can be lounging in Venice beach in sandals and shorts or in riding a bike in an awesome hat, fabulous sun glasses, and a vintage summer dress in the a.m. Have a lunch at any of the famous lunch spots and dinner and drinks in downtown L.A. or WEHO wearing the most eccentric ensemble one decides to wear. And finally after all the clubs and bars close down end up at Canters on Fairfax!! There one gets to see what everyone else wore for their perfect L.A. night out….Perfection!
I get the “fake”, I love it! It is important not to take the “fake” too serious. Living in L.A. one gets the chance to play dress up every day, kinda like when we were kids. You can’t live in L.A. and take yourself too serious! L.A. can be cruel that way, that’s why it is important to be genuine regardless of where one lives.
Viva Los Angeles!!!

Line in from a film this post reminded me of-
California's like a beautiful, wild girl on heroin... who's high as a kite, thinkin' she's on top of the world, not knowing she's dying even if you show her the marks. -The motorcycle boy, in rumble fish. Awesome film.
yay for good ole inspo.posts how they are easy.
I'm so glad you post new post! that's great!
your pictures are pretty. I like the PROENZA SCHOULER outfit! the blue is great and I like how the black and white print shirt is out the blue one. that's great!

Ah, Courtney, I wish she was still as fierce as back in the days...she's a total mess right now, not always in a good way. However, she's still SO SO cool. (with the exception of when she uses twitter to argue with Lilly Allen, lol)
Gee I just love your inspiration posts :)
anyone interested in other fashion/art/inspiration blogs, mine is new and im still figuring everything out, but I'll get it eventually :)

I'm glad LA inspires you just as much as it has inspired me.
People who think it is "fake" are just over generalizing a conditioned stereotype that old Hollywood has created. It is far less glamorous than people give it credit in that matter. There's a lot of artistic freedom here because it is so impersonal and you are allowed to be whomever you want to be without feeling judged. You are what you attract, so if people want Hollywood-they'll get it, but for everyone else, it's a diverse experience that offers so much culture and art.
I know what you mean about "Special thingys". I have some of my own planned don my blog...

HOLE!
Courtney really used to be great.
but I saw an interview she had on English television a while back and apparently she's a huge fan of the likes of Rick Owens and Ann Demeulemeester! Took me a bit by surprise.
LA is fake but that is part of what makes it real too; the fact that people are can openly recognize their flaws and change them without being ashamed is one of the realest things a person can do in my opinion! :)

I love LA! I've been a proud LA County resident all my life! But anyway this whole "fake" LA thing...are LA people stereotypically pretentious? It's not true for everyone...I've met people from the valley who are just as down-to-earth as NorCalians. I love LA for being so relaxed...you can see it in the way people dress. Tees, shorts, flip flops. An annoying uniform that I sometimes opt for. Just throw on some clothes and you're good to go! There's no need to live up to a certain image.
Tavi, I know you're a huge fan of thrifted + vintage fashion. And anyone else who is; check this blog! It's written by two college girls "swamped with homework whose only outlet is through fashion."
It's just adorable. Their style combinations are so fifties.

I love your blog. It's fantastic :)
Nice photos and style. You have a follower more.

I've been a lurking reader, but OH MY GOSH I was obsessed with Francesca Lia Block back in the day ... I truly love this post darling. I still have all my books...potential spring break activity.
That's my favorite schouler outfit from that collection. I like the idea of wrapping up the waist tight. It looks and feels good.
yay finally someone else who reads francesca lia block! im obsessed with her :) love the mix of this inspiration... very different and awesome!
hey come see my blog xxxooo
LOVE Francesca Lia Block. The best thing is to listen to My Bloody Valentine's album "Loveless" while reading the Weetzie Bat books.
<3 sigh...
I'm so glad people are still reading those books. As a New Yorker I credit Witch Baby and Dangerous Angels for my sunny optimism. ;)

Weetzie Bat and all her books are great. She makes L.A. seem so rad!
I must say this to you.. knowing you love Weetzie Bat like I do makes me feel a bit closer to you!! I don't know anyone else who will ecen acknowledge the book so I must not knwo anyone worth knowing :/ Lol but I love Witch Baby, i'm a misfit so I feel more connected with her. Weetzie is my idol though >_<
Man, I LOVE Francesca Lia Block! I have always been inspired by her books--also, Cintra Wilson's Colors Insulting to Nature is AMAZING too, and in a similar stylistic vein, though a little more into the pop culture, satire, and wry humor. Just found your blog today, and I LOVE it!
ok, second comment today, yeesh. FLB was there right alongside Sassy in cementing my DIY personal cultivation as a younger person. You are on the right track, girl... u know that, but I'm just saying.
P.S. I'm totally jelz that FLB commented on your blog. lucky.

oops sorry hubris to think you were talking about me
courtney, huh? ah
check out my tweets anyway xxxooo
i am ecstatic to hear that a current teenager loves the hell out of weetzie bat. i'm a more witch baby person myself, but with occasional weetzie and cherokee tendencies. dangerous angels was pretty much my bible in high school. <33333333
furthermore, it's really awesome that she commented on your blog.
Wait, why are you in L.A.?
