oh my god an alpaca

Thank you for all the kind and supportive emails re my last post, which made me decide that I officially have The Most Awesomest Readers In The World. Let's all have a tea party where we talk about the 90's and Japanese street style and Freaks and Geeks, yes? *the little less-than-three symbols, because if I actually typed it out, the html would be messed up, and I refuse to resort to alt+3, because that heart is so myspace*

Anyway, apologies for the slow-down in posting, I have been a little busy pretending to clean my room but actually listening to the Pixies:
this is where i keep the crap.
PHOTOGRAPH THIS, SELBY. I cannot see my floor. Except in a couple places, that I have memorized in my head, so I know where to step in case of fire hazard/when I get up in the middle of the night and my lights are out and I can't see anything and I'm on my way to the bathroom when my Spock bobblehead randomly says "You are being highly illogical" and I freak out.
this is where i keep the other crap.
Please note: empty glasses from days before, overflowing trash, fake cigarettes for when I want to scare Sheba because she once had a dream about me smoking and it freaked her out. Hyuk hyuk hyuk.

This is, in fact, how my room also looked a couple months ago (I am obviously very progressive!) when Tommy paid a visit from Canadaland to photograph my space and me for Vogue Paris. I panicked and mostly shoved everything into a corner, but he was very pleasant and understanding and worked around my Heaps of Important Junk. Then we ate leftover pizza and talked about blogging politics (because we are srs bzns) and The September Issue and Hamish Bowles in drag. Some of my Junk is on a shelf.
Also, please note VERY SERIOUS BLOGGING EXPRESSION.
Some of my Junk is organized in a creepy homage to Bob Dylan. Some may even call it a SHRINE. But that would be creepy. So we do not call it that.
scans via
Anyone wanna email me a translation of the article/leave it in the comments? Because that would be lovely. ETA: I have a translation now, thanks!!
Thank you, Tommy and Vogue Paris!!

Speaking of Paris, a little rundown of outfits from couture week:Untitled 3
pictures via Cafe Mode and Grazia
What I wore to Dior and Armani. The usual mixing-prints-of-the-same-colors, blah. And comfy orthopedic shoes. Also this coat makes me feel like a ghost, which is quite lovely. Also I had to take off the hat to get in and out of the car.
Comme des Garcons coat, Topshop tights, vintage t-shirt (gift, but you can barely see it anyway) and shoes (Salvation Army), Stephen Jones for Dior hat. And Prada skirt, which I bought on eBay after posting about that collection and deciding the universe would be sucked into a black hole if I didn't own the lipstick skirt. After which, my father reminded me that the universe does not, in fact!, revolve around me, and my closet, and, consequently, I cannot buy any more clothes for a couple months. Wah wah.

You can kind of see the colors better here, or, Some Other Excuse For Posting This Picture Because I Sometimes Brag About Things:
IMG_0417
Only one of my favorite pictures ever. Also, I will have really good stories to tell my grandchildren, when I live in a house like Grey Gardens and my hair is about the same color.

What I wore to Chanel, as documented by Hanneli (who is like..the nicest person? ever? and also owns all of my dream shoes?)
Vintage sweater and shoes (both Salvation Army) and hat (gift); Hussein Chalayan dress (via Opening Ceremony); H&M tights. I wanted to wear the dress because it matched my robot alien hair and then mix the fuzzy black textures of the sweater and hat (and shoes, though the fuzzy factor is less severe in that case.)

Untitled 4
Two pictures (from Grazia and Tommy Ton for style.com) pieced together because I forgot to ask my dad if he could take one when it was light out.
I find the second picture so amusing, especially the version with my dad in it, har har. ONCE AGAIN, I AM SO SRS BZNS. My moleskine is full of secrets.

Anyway wore this to Givenchy. I wanted to wear these vintage sunglasses that make everything look pretty and 70's movie-ish through them. Unless somebody is Anna Wintour, I think wearing sunglasses indoors or when it's dark out is kind of d-baggy. And I wore these both indoors AND when it was dark out! But we all know I am a d-bag anyway, plus they're Givenchy, so it seemed approps. Built the outfit around them and the tortoiseshell. Vintage coat and sunglasses (both gifts) and skirt (via Salvation Army), Tin Tin t-shirt (can't really see) was a gift from a swap with Isabel, Yokoo chain, Jonathan Aston red tights and Pamela Mann blue tights (both via MyTights), and Comme des Garcons shoes.
These are all colors I consider to be "fall colors," so I guess I tried to balance that out with the brown. And then lipstick (Chanel) to balance out the red shoes with some red on top.
The tights work by putting on one pair and then putting the other pair on only one leg (over the first pair) and tying its other leg in a knot around your waist. The second pair kind of awkwardly fell down at some points, BUT, awkward can be very fun, especially when it makes other people uncomfortable, and I am spiteful like that.
IMG_0665
And with Hanneli, with whom I can speak Norwegian and feel cool and stuff. Heiiii Hanneli. Du ma sove med ett oye apent. Jeg er Proenza sulten.
IMG_0663

Well, this was about the most narcissistic post ever! On an unrelated note, all this snow outside needs to leave, like, now. Two months ago it would've been exciting, but now it's just like the weather gods are Jay Leno and the snow is the punchline to his joke, which he always repeats, like, twelve times.

I love this post, narcissistic or not. I love the picture of you on the computer! I also love the color of your walls. I had a phase when I was unhealthily obsessed with Bob Dylan and read every biography known to man plus his autobiography plus I wanted to ask him to be my mentor...now I just listen to his music and appreciate the creative brilliance without being a huge creep. Also, in regards to your last post, it sucks that people, instead of being supportive of your success, choose to actively look for faults and things they can mold into negative commentary. Nobody asked them to read the blog if they took issue with it.

Hey Tavi.
Decided rather than cleaning my room (which is unforunately much worse than your's) I'd translate this for you. It's a pretty good write up. You can judge how good the translation is from your quotes, which hopefully you recognise!
Love your work.
xo

The guardian has named her "the true STAR of fashion week". She is neither a model, nor a designer, and definitely not a client: at 13 years old Tavi Gevinson has, however, swapped loud air-kisses with Muiccia PRADA, collaborated with Rei Kasakubo, is attending, front-row, the Marc JACOBS runway show and has over 10 million daily readers, breathless over her BLOG. Self-named "style rookie" this US mini-ICON proves the return of fashion is assured. For PLEASURE, and not looking to seduce.

A GIRL. At 13 years old, with her tiny frame and her borderline allure completely revindicated, Tavi is a girl that is complicated to meet with: when she is not inJapan, invited to Tokyo by Comme des Garcons, she's cramming for her exams to enter the first year of high school. But in any case, in the Aoyama boutique as in her Chicago middle school, Tavi is cultivating her sense of fashion. Carried by an individual spirit "clothes, the way of matching them, is a way to amuse yourself and at the same time express your emotions"

A STYLE. A thousand miles removed from the mainstream teeny bopper. Nothing to do with the first tentative attempts at glamour, vaguely sexy: "I'm too young for that: maybe that will interest me later, but definitely not at the moment." She describes herself as "edgy, experimental, pushing the boundaries of good taste" pairing a poofy skirt with muticolored tights without hesitation, XXL shirt and brightly-patterned leggings, platform shoes and quasi-conceptual hats. All this crowned with a pair of top-of-the-class glasses, for the allure of a junior anthroplogist cum shaker-of-the-creator-spirit.

A WORLD. That of blogs, of the internet, of posts, of comments, of ranking and shopping on-line. She begins by watching the February 2008 runways, plunging herself into a fashion galaxy in which the stars are named FashionRobot, StyleBubble, Kingdon of Style... "It's a little world of such incomplex bloggers that straightaway seduced me, especially because they did not take themselves seriously and weren't trying to please anyone" highlights Tavi, who a few weeks later launched her own site, never imagining that tavi-thenewgirlintown.blogspot.com would within a few months become one of the hits of the blogosphere of style.

INSPIRATIONS. Nothing predestined the third daughter of an English teacher and a teacher of Danish origin pinched from the tapestry (?) to occupy the top ranks of the runway and the height of the bundle of the most visited blogs. "Fashion, I discovered it through music, movies, books. Like a magic formula that allows you to change roles,¨ confides the admirer of Blanche Dubois in A Streetcar Named Desire, Enid in Ghost World, adolescent with huge glasses who could be a cousin of Ugly Betty, but also Tilda Swinton, Chloe Sevigny and even Charlotte Gainsbourg. Otherwise, japanese street style, the 80s, and the fashion series of Vogue, Pop, Dazed & Confused never stop inspiring her.

DESIGNERS. Prada, Marni, Vivienne Westwood, Rodarte, Marc Jacobs, Junya Watanabe, and lastly, Richard Nicholl. "Obviously, I don't have the means to buy their pieces, so my own clothes come from my two sisters, H&M, thrift stores in my neighbourhood." Tavi has no complex over the price of the clothes that she would one day like to wear: "Of course, some dresses are very expensive. But after all, cars and sports tickets aren't cheap either", she explains, knowingly.

Unknown said...

ACCESSOIRES. DIY hats: "They always add personality" Anna Piaggi and Isabella Blow have made them their signature" But also oversized scarves from her friend Yokoo, enormous knitted wool chains other XXL nets by the kilometre, and fantasy necklaces. "I have tonnes of them, that are kind of strewn all over the house. My favourite had a little harmonica pendant, but it's disappeared." To replace it, she wouldn't say no to a Lanvin necklace.

MEETINGS. Kate and Laura Mulleavy, the two designer sisters of Rodarte, contacted her via her blog. "We had lunch together in a market in LA and, strangely enough, we talked about everything, and not much about fashion." But her most memorable meeting was with Rei Kawakubo. "We had already seen each other twice in her office. She's the designer who fascinated me the most, and also the most difficult to approach. The little American and the invisible Japanese will work together on a shared project, for the moment classified top secret.

HOBBY. Reading: a devourer of books. Tavi doesn't miss a David Sedaris and loves by The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides. At the moment, she's made D.V., Diana Vreeland's autobiography, her bedtime reading.

FUTURE. Later, Tavi sees herself being a journalist. Or stylist. Or photographer. "Probably not a designer: I prefer giving life to clothes rather than imagining them." For the moment, she is preparing to begin high school, doesn't really know which subjects to choose, spends hours flicking through magazines in art class, and continues to blog. Tavi manages her celebrity calmly. Besides, at school no one seems to have noticed. "Yeah, people call me, magazines write articles", she admits. "But my life is super normal. I'm nothing like Hannah Montana." No: with her mini-stature, her improbable allure and her glasses, Tavi seems above all to take a step in the direction of Daria, the heroine of the MTV series. Out-of-step, sarcastic, emminently nice.

hi tavi,

i translated the first page of the article:

A GIRL. At 13 years with her tiny shape and borderline allure, tavi is girl who is hard to meet:
when shes not in japan, invited to tokyo by "comme de garcons" she's craming for her first grade highscool exam.
But in all cases she is cultivating her sense of fashion supported by a unique state of mind:
"clothes, to assemble them, it's having fun and expressing emotions at the same time."

A STYLE. far off mainstream teenage-girly. Nothing to do with first attempts to be glamorous or vaguely sexy either:
"I'm too young for this: maybe I'll be interested in that later in my life, but not at the moment, for sure!"
She describes herself as "edgy, expermimental, at the edge of good taste" mixing togheter without hesitaiton jupe bouffant multicolored stockings,
XXL shirts and colorful leggins, plateau shoes and quasi conceptual hats. The whole thing coronated by a nerdy pair of glasses
thus giving her the looks of a young antropologist strained in a shaker with the spirits of creativity.

A WORLD. The one of blogs, internet, posting, commenting and online shopping. She starts watching fashion shows
in february 2008 plunging herself into a galaxy of fashion its stars having names like FashionRobot StyleBubble, Kingdom of style...
"it's a small world of bloggers which has instantly seduced me especially because they don't take themselves to seroiusly
and don't seek to please anyone" tavy emphasizes. weeks after she launches her own blog, a little bit by hazard, without imagining that
tavi-thenewgirlintown.blogspot.com would become one of the hits in the blogsphere of style in a few month.

INSPIRATIONS. Nothing predestinated the third daughter of an englisch professor and an originally danish teacher to be picked to
occupy the first row of fashion shows or providing one of the most read blogs. "I discovered fashion trough music, movies, books.
like a magic formula which allows to change roles" the admirer of Blanche Dubois in "A Streetcar Named Desire", Enid in "Ghost World" a teen with
big glasses who could be ugly bettys cousin, but also Tilda Swinton, Chloe Sevigny and even Charlotte Gainsbourg. Apart
from that the japanes street, the 80ies, and the fashoion series of Vogue, Pop, Dazed&confused never stop inspiring her.

I'll post the second one as soon as i come round...

ACCESSOIRS.hats, manufactured to dimension: "They always enhance a personalty. Anna Piaggi and Isabella Blow have made
a signature out of it" But also the oversized shawls of her buddy Yokoo, enormous knitted chains, XXL shirts and fantasy colliers.
"I have tons of them all over the house, my favorite one had a little harmonica as a pendant, but it has vanished"
To replace it, she wouldn't say no to a Lanvin collier.

ENCOUNTER. kate and laura muleavy, the two creative sisters of Rodarte contacted her via her blog.
"we had dinner together at a market in LA and funny enough we talked about everything but very little about fashion."
But her most memorable encounter was with Rei Kawakubo. "we have met twice at her office. she is the fashion designer who fascinates me most
and is the most difficult to approach"
the little american and the invisible japanese will work on a project classiefied as top secret for the moment beeing.

HOBBY. The reading: bolting down books, tavi doesn't miss a David Sedaris and is passionated for Jeffrey Eugenides "the virgin suicides"
At the moment the autobiografy of Diana Vreeland is her favorite book.

FUTURE. later, tavi imagines herself as a journalist. or a stylist. or a photographer.
"without any doubt not a fashion designer. i prefer to give live to clothes instead of inventing them"
At the moment she's preparing her access to highscool without knowing exactly which direction to choose. she passes hours
flipping through old magazines in art class and continues her blogging. she tales her fame calmly - in school no one seems
to even have noticed it. "Yes, people call me and write articles" she admits "but my life is super normal. it has nothing to
do with hannah montana" No: with her mini size, her incredible emanation and her glasses, she's more like Daria the hero of the series
broadcasted by MTV. eccentric, sarcastic and most sympathic.

FASHION DESIGNERS: Prada, Marni, Vivenne Westwood, Rodarte, Marc Jacobs, Junya Watanabe and recently richard Nicoll
"of course i don't have the remedy to purchase one of their pieces. my clothes come from my sisters, H&M, vintage shops in my neighbouthood"
no complexes about the prizes of clothes she'd to wear one day.
"sure, some pieces are very expensive. but after all, the cars, the tickets for sports matches aren't given for free neither" she remarks prudently.

I saw you im Grazia and thought that scarf was a-maz-ing. And the bow hat as well. I went through a phase when I was younger of wearing one leg of fishnets and one stripey sock leg-simply done by putting the sock over the tights on one leg. I really quite want to see this Tintin t-shirt. Ooh, and another thing, Grazia thought you'd dyed your hair Chanel-grey, and I was like, 'No, it's blue you morons!'

i think it's extremely worrying that you are in so many of these fabulous magazines, go to the most amazing fashion shows, when all you seem to do is sit at a computer, judge other designers and wear really random clothing. then there are people like me who are slaving our asses off to be able to get somewhere in life. maybe i should just do what you do, wear ridiculous clothing and dye my hair pink. obviously that's what's going to get me far

Everything looks so exciting! Absolutely love that kick ass bow on your head, and the mismatched tights.

Also, I recommend having a pair of industrial boots by your bedside to simply slip into and then happily stomp over your floor mess in case of emergencies. That's what I'd do anyway once my mess breathes a life on its own, and I bet it'll be pretty satisfying to hear stuff crunch like bubble wrap :P

What an experience!!!! I love your room, they say 'when life is messy, life is good'. It's a good metaphor.

I have to voice my opinion and say I don't like the comment by 'Erin' - you, Tavi, posted this yesterday before the knowledge of McQ's death - I won't be reading her blog. Seems arrogant that she then requested you to do so, maybe you know her though, her comment is unneccesary.

Hiya, Tavi!
I always like how you show your love for Freaks and Geeks, so I thought I'd recommend you another show which I found a couple of weeks ago. You may already know it, a lot of people liken it to Freaks and Geeks, it's also a nineties show that was cancelled despite it's greatness. But well, quality over quantity any time!
It's called "My So-Called Life". It's also extremely realistic... it often baffles me, the thoughts and things said (especially by the lead character Angela, played by Claire Danes who was just 15 at the time!). They also all have awesome punk-ish nineties style. I want Angela's hair. You should REALLY see it.
Anyway, always love to read your blog! Keep it up :)!

Hey Tavz (I am going to call you TavZ 'cause I adore you) I have been reading your blog since (close to) the begining, and this is the first time I've left a comment.

Probably because I need some words on the death of Mr. McQueen? I don't know. None of my friends are really into fashion so when I heard I was so devestated and I had no one to discuss the matter with. Anyways, it cheered me up a bit to see all the previous comments about Alexander McQueen. I now know I am not alone! And this has turned in to a completely random mess of thoughts.
MY POINT; I love your blog, you were probably one of the first fashion bloggers I ever started following. You are an inspiration, always. And I can't wait to hear your comment on McQueen, because I know that no matter how short or long you choose to say it you are great with words and I will probably read it and think "THAT'S what I was thinking".
So thanks for being awesome TavZZ
complete random rambling again. sorry

David Ansell, MD, MPH said...

Dear Tavi:

There is a very slippery slope in the world and it slopes towards commercialization and money. There is a whole literature that clearly shows that even small gifts such as food or baubles influences decisions that people make at the unconscious or sometimes a conscious level. If this did not work then you wouldn't be sent address labels from charities of all sorts at holiday time. People send money in after getting something as simple as address labels.

What does this have to do with the world of fashion blogging? It is a crucial component of the industry; not quite a glossy ad in a magazine, but in the end, pretty close. Bloggers are likely to be as commecialized as the folks they are covering. Is it fun? yes. Is it honest and unbiased-no. Not once one begins to accept gifts of any sort from the industry you are covering. Does this mean one should not accept gifts? No, but you need to know that the lens through which you look is changed by the very act of receiving. There is no free will. This is no different for magazine writers or editors. So in that sense it's a level playing field and at least the bloggers are not yet focused on having advertisements on their sites.

What the magazine editors are upset about is that the bloggers are real competition; a form of free advertising that can put their magazines out of business. The Indians sold Manhattan for $ 24dollars of wampum. Bloggers are selling fashion for a lot cheaper than the magazines do. And don't think the Fashion houses have not figured it out. I'm sure you understand this way better than I have articulated. Just keep having fun with this and your eyes open.
